I read Sicky's message on consciousness, and his views drawn from Steven Pinker (linguist), further his thoughts re Darwin and Jung.
In terms of Darwin, while I recognise he played a vital role in challenging creationists and bringing evolution to the forefront, at the same time I believe he himself became stuck on physicality; as in the evolution of the physical realm. Breaking all things down into separate and distinct categories, physically. Unable to go deep enough into the foundations (perhaps due to the limitations of science in his day, as well as his own limited life-span) of evolution. With this in mind I feel anyone seriously committed to studying the process of evolution and consciousness need be mindful of the limitations of Darwinism.
Jung on the other hand, offers an extraordinarily broad knowledge base into consciousness, far beyond merely that of the collective conscious.
Steven Pinker is a linguist 'extraodinaire' in my view. Willing to challenge many hard held concepts, and definitely worthy of heeding. However I don't recall in any of his books, any claim the brain is other than what it is. A tool. As our hand is a tool for grasping etc. Our brain is our tool for the expression of consciousness. I do not recall Pinker claiming the mind, consciousness, is encased within the brain. If he does I missed that altogether.
I am still studying the 'WSM' presented in this website, and want to fully grasp it before commenting on it. But as for Consciousness, I feel all IS consciousness...further that an underlying intelligence is at the back of existence. Synchronicity, for me, is a fact and to the degree it is far more believable than coincidence. Opening our eyes to the occurences of synchronistic events draws our attention to the reality all things are interconnected, further that an intelligence flows in and through-out all existence - ourselves included.
Our window into reality is tiny, so it is easy to miss the order in apparently random events. But I do not doubt the order is there nevertheless.

Hi Alison,
Given your interest in Synchronicity / Jung you may find posts by knoti nuffi rumi interesting.
Clearly all things (matter, mind & space) are subtly interconnected across the universe, WSM explains how (the particle concept is silly in this respect). As to intelligence of waves in space, I think we are all pretty limited, though i suppose the whole system is intelligent due to its complex yet logical (and ultimately simple) interconnections.
Is there a 'higher intelligence'? I see evolution as a mix of blind, brutal and stupid, and incredibly clever subtle and complex. I try to keep an open skeptical mind as to whether there exists an intelligence behind this process (would like to see some empirical evidence).
But that discussion can occur over the next few years!
All the best and take care in a crazy world!
