"When forced to summarize the general theory of relativity in one sentence: Time and space and gravitation have no separate existence from matter. ... Physical objects are not in space, but these objects are spatially extended ... thus the concept of particles cannot play a fundamental part, ... and can only appear as a limited region in space in which the field strength or energy density are particularly high."
(Albert Einstein, Metaphysics of Relativity, 1950)
"It is my firm belief that the last seven decades of the twentieth century will be characterized in history as the dark ages of theoretical physics. ... The quantum world is a world of waves, not particles."
(Carver Mead, Professor Emeritus at Caltech. Received $500,000 Lemelson-MIT Prize in 1999)

Hi Folks,
This topic relates to a number of others; I decided to start a new thread as I feel that up to now it is one of the best examples of the 'elusive obvious'.
In "Living Truth' the journey is such that one inevitably comes upon that which cannot be explained. In other words there comes a point where terms like 'God', the Unknown, Emptyness, Infinite Space, and so forth are used as pointers/place holders for that which cannot be explained.
I feel that what is called Dreamless Sleep is of this realm yet with the highly significant difference that it can be 'tasted'.
When you speak of Dreamless Sleep the vast majority of others will understand what you are speaking about because it is common to all humans. Yet Dreamless Sleep is really not an 'experience'.
A little investigation reveals that folks do not experience Dreamless Sleep yet they know of it because of the 'aftertaste' of it. And the aftertaste of a period of Dreamless Sleep wherein the 'sleeper' rested is such that on awakening from it one feels recharged, refreshed, renewed... and it is this aftertaste whereby folks feel that they know Dreamless Sleep.
The scientific information of brainwaves generally falls into four categories:
Beta: alert waking consciousness; the waves are of low amplitude and their frequency is said to be high and ranges from 15 to 40 cycles a second
Alpha: relaxed yet alert; waves are higher in amplitude than Beta and their frequency ranges from from 9 to 14 cycles per second;
Theta: drowsy, possibly daydreaming; the waves are of a higher amplitude than Alpha and the frequency range is normally between 5 and 8 cycles a second
Delta: dreaming sleep; dreamless Sleep; here the brainwaves are of the greatest amplitude and slowest frequency. They range from 1.5 to 4 cycles per second. They never go down to zero because that would mean brain death. Deep dreamless sleep would take you down a frequency of 2 to 3 cycles a second.
How does this fit with WSM?
Hopefilly some of it is obvious as the aftertaste experience of Dreamless Sleep is a clear pointer to the nameless something that is essential to the human condition. And this nameles something (I call it Source) clearly has the restorative, recharging and renewing abilities that are self-evident after a period of Dreamless Sleep. Therefore it can be said that whatever this nameless something is - IT ACTS - and its action is appropriate to the situation - therefore intelligent!
In my yoga activities I help folks explore what is called Yoga Nidra. This translates as 'Yogic Sleep'. The process appears as 'Guided Relaxation' - the deepest phase of this is something akin to Dreamless Sleep yet the practitioner is not asleep - she/he is deeply relaxed yet alert. My experience is that folks benefit greatly from this as it is a means of healing - it is also a means for them to allow a SPACE whereby creative solutions to their 'problems' arise for them... most folks report that they have a greater PEACE in their lives and although new problems do come up as their life unfolds nothing is 'problematic'.
Namaste'

Dreamless sleep is a state of knowing and not thinking. When we think we are resisting knowing. Perhaps when the cycles of brain waves is equal to the cycle of the heart, about 1 per sec., we are one with Spirit.
During dreamless sleep and meditation we are united and healing. Our wave structure of matter is in harmony with our wave structure of mind, because they are naturally the same.
But because we can choose to think, we affect the wave structure of our mind which affects our body and can affect all of mind and all matter. Just as physical action (contact, sex, exercise, food, drugs, air, radiation, sound, etc…) can affect mind. Matter and mind are the same interconnected thing, the result of the motion of Spirit/Space. |
