"When forced to summarize the general theory of relativity in one sentence: Time and space and gravitation have no separate existence from matter. ... Physical objects are not in space, but these objects are spatially extended ... thus the concept of particles cannot play a fundamental part, ... and can only appear as a limited region in space in which the field strength or energy density are particularly high."
(Albert Einstein, Metaphysics of Relativity, 1950)
"It is my firm belief that the last seven decades of the twentieth century will be characterized in history as the dark ages of theoretical physics. ... The quantum world is a world of waves, not particles."
(Carver Mead, Professor Emeritus at Caltech. Received $500,000 Lemelson-MIT Prize in 1999)

I wasn't sure if I should go into somebody else's
"hello" topic to say the same thing.. I don't want
to start off here by needlessly wasting bandwidth.
Hello - My name's Jerry, I'm from the midwest
and am real, REAL old. But I thought I
might enjoy discussing these fascinating
subjects, and maybe even have something to
offer once in a while of my own thoughts.
Plus, I really love it when I find myself changing
my mind about something. I hope there are
others who feel the same way.
I like to skydive, and have been doing that
for thirty years now.. so have have to be
philosophical about a few things, in addition
to certain practicalities.
I'm looking forward to exploring this site..
thank you so much for just being here!
- Jerry |

Hi Jerry,
You are very welcome here. Thanks for your nice post.
I feel really old sometimes and I am 46.
My best friend on the Internet, maths physicist Milo Wolff is now 82 (he worked out most things about Wave Structure of Matter in his mid 60s after retiring).
And it is central to philosophy that we should keep learning throughout our life.
I am too scared to skydive. But I have a pilots license that i don't use. Am thinking about building a kit plane once i retire from building website!
We look forward to the thoughts of a 'real real old' explorer.
So goodonya!

Dear Jerry,
Hello skypilot and welcome to the forum!
Your post is very sweet and I just had to write to say hi!
I am Geoff's partner and I am too scared to ever go up in an aeroplane with him (that he has built and is flying!). Paragliding I would like to do some day (we live near a cliffy coastline which would be great fun to jump off).
Glad you like the site and I look forward to further explorations,
Karene |
